PWRM, Power 3 Medical Products Inc., PWRM.OB
PWRM is a leader in bio-medical research and the commercialization of neurodegenerative disease and cancer biomarkers, pathways, and mechanisms of diseases through the development of diagnostic tests and drug targets. PWRM’s patent-pending technologies are being used to develop screening and diagnostic tests for the early detection and prognosis of disease, identify protein biomarkers, and drug targets, and its diagnostic tests are targeted toward markets with critical unmet needs in areas including neurodegenerative disease (NuroPro) and breast cancer (BC-SeraPro). PWRM operates a state-of-the-art CLIA certified laboratory in The Woodlands (Houston), Texas and continues to evolve and enhance its IP portfolio, employing sensitive and specific combinations of biomarkers it has discovered from a broad range of diseases as the basis of highly selective blood-based tests for ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, breast cancer, and drug resistance.
** PWRM reported that 4 abstracts covering results from clinical validation trials of the NuroPro(R) AD test for Alzheimer’s disease were submitted to the 2010 annual meeting of the International Congress of Alzheimer’s Disease, taking place July 2010. The NuroPro AD test was developed to help clinicians distinguish patients with Alzheimer’s disease from “normal” individuals and patients with other neurological disorders. The test, developed by Power3, is a panel of 57 blood serum protein biomarkers evaluated by biostatistical analysis to predict the probability a patient has Alzheimer’s disease. The test is intended to solve the critical challenge facing physicians, clinicians, and patients for quick, early stage, and accurate diagnosis of this debilitating disease as well as to provide guidance for therapy, and monitor treatment response.
The four studies present the capabilities of NuroPro for accurate diagnosis, targeted therapy and drug response monitoring. They involve a total of 154 Alzheimer’s disease and 91 Parkinson’s disease patients, 210 age-matched normal and 173 disease control individuals. The abstracts report the combined results from the clinical validation trials of the NuroPro(R) AD and NuroPro PD tests, conducted by the PWRM scientific team, led by medical director Lourdes R. Bosquez, MD and chief scientific officer, Ira L. Goldknopf, Ph.D., in collaboration with Marwan Sabbagh, MD, director of the Banner Sun Health Research Institute, Sun City, Arizona, Katerina Markopoulou, M.D., Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Thessaly, Larissa Greece, along with previous studies Power3 conducted with Stanley H. Appel, MD during his tenure as Chairman of Neurology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston TX. Dr. Appel is now Co-Director of the Methodist Neurological Research Institute, Houston, TX, and continues to be chairman of the scientific advisory board of Power3.

HEB, Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc.
HEB is an advanced specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the manufacture and clinical development of new drug entities for treatment of seriously debilitating disorders.
HEB reported a recent study, published in the December 20th issue of Virology (2009) by a consortium of researchers at Utah State University and the University of North Carolina, on a newly developed animal model of severe acute respiratory disease syndrome (SARS) which, according to the authors, ” … largely mimicked human disease”. SARS emerged in 2002 in the Guangdong province of Southern China as a new infectious respiratory disease characterized by influenza-like symptoms with a very high mortality rate. The researchers characterized and adapted a new strain of the SARS virus (SARS-CoV) to mice that was 100% lethal and was associated with the overproduction of cytokines and severe lung pathology (Day CW, et al. Virology, 395:210-222, 2009).
Multiple agents with purported antiviral activity were evaluated for activity in this unique mouse model of the human disease, including Ampligen(R) (Poly I : Poly C12U), ribavirin (a commercially available antiviral with multiple modes of action for certain respiratory diseases) and other experimental agents. The researchers found that, uniquely among the agents tested, Ampligen(R), an experimental therapeutic, ” … protected against death and gross damage to the lungs in the presence of lethal SARS-CoV” and was associated with a reduction in IL-6 concentration in which high levels of the cytokine correlated with the mortality of SARS-CoV infection. Mortality was high, under the conditions tested, for all the other antiviral agents examined, including ribavirin, that have previously been used extensively in humans with SARS without definitive evidence of efficacy (Stockman LJ, et al. PLoS Med 3 (9),e 343).
To date, there are no approved agents for treating SARS. Animal experiments do not necessarily predict safety or efficacy in man. Encouraged by these results, HEB is now in discussions with Chinese clinical research organizations to institute clinical antiviral programs in China.
