Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure on your pelvic and rectal veins. Hemorrhoids develop because blood flows from the veins and the tissue becomes swollen. Hemorrhoids can be caused because of a rushed bowel movement, consistent diarrhea or constipation, as well as due to pregnancy and obesity. There are a variety of ways to treat hemorrhoids at home, without the need to see a doctor. In order to treat hemorrhoids at home you need to avoid making your situation worse, relieve pain, and rest.
In order to begin treating hemorrhoids you need to establish a regular bowel movement schedule, relieving your body of waste each day. To reduce pain and swelling take a pain medication such as Tylenol. Avoid NSAIDs because they can increase bleeding. Aspirin and ibuprofen should not be used to treat hemorrhoids.
Once you realize that you have a hemorrhoid you need to begin relieving yourself of the pain and itching sensation. Itching can cause hemorrhoids to become infected or inflamed and allow bacteria to grow. Avoid making your hemorrhoid worse by using a damp tissue and cleansing the area. Baby wipes and moisturized towels work well. Do not rub the anal area, as this can irritate your hemorrhoids. When rinsing, blot yourself dry with a clean towel. To treat hemorrhoids at home, use soaps and bathing solutions that do not have perfumes or dyes.
While most cases of hemorrhoids can be resolved in a short period, it is important that you treat hemorrhoids properly. Ensure that you are receiving adequate rest. In severe cases, it may be necessary to stay in bed for up to one day. If you are not pregnant, it is advisable that you sleep on your stomach with a pillow underneath your hips. Doing so will reduce the swelling on and around your hemorrhoids. Avoid sitting or standing for extended periods of time. If you need to sit for a while, place a pillow underneath your buttocks. Avoid lifting heavy objects when you have hemorrhoids as this adds to the irritation.
Treat hemorrhoids by wearing cotton undergarments, which can prevent moisture from building up in the area. Added moisture can increase bacteria and irritate your hemorrhoids. Wearing loose and lightweight clothing can allow you to reduce pressure on the anal, abdominal, and pelvic areas. Avoid using items such as ring cushions as they escalate the problem.
Hemorrhoids are a serious medical issue and should not be taken lightly. Treat hemorrhoids at home only if you know that they are not infected. There are many complications that can occur, this it is best to manage your hemorrhoids under medical supervision. Contact a healthcare professional if you notice mild to moderate pain for more than one week, severe pain or swelling, bulging tissue, or a hard mass such as a tumor. Contact your doctor immediately if you are at risk for, or have a family history of, colon cancer. Only your doctor can make appropriate recommendations as per your course of action and treatment plan.
